This case study involves SARS-CoV-2 testing of a 3-month-old child. The patient’s parents had tested positive for COVID-19, and shortly afterwards the patient was admitted to hospital with diarrhoea and fever. 14 days after symptom onset, the patient’s oropharyngeal swab tested negative for the illness, however anal swabs remained positive for four weeks after symptom onset. These findings correlate with Yongjian Wu et al.’s recent study in The Lancet, which found that positive SARS-CoV-2 virus had a delayed onset in fecal samples compared to respiratory testing, however was longer-lasting.
