Fecal-oral transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is likely, given the shedding of live virus in stool samples. This could go some way to explain the rapid spread of the disease on the Diamond Princess cruise ship, as the virus may have been transmitted through “sewage, waste, contaminated water, air condition system and aerosols”. Fecal-oral spread also poses a problem for densely populated living areas, such as tower blocks, residential care homes or hospitals - see Lessons from Amoy Gardens.
